2013 Portuguese National Award for Urban Rehabilitation – Best Commercial Use

Shortlisted – 2013 Urban Intervention Award Berlin

The award-winning Praça de Lisboa offers a thoughtful redesign of a historically significant public space. The proposed solution was based on the principle that the square should adopt an open, pedestrian-friendly shape, fostering a dynamic relationship with its surroundings while shedding the former interiority of the space.

To create a more dignified and accessible environment, the design introduced a new topography that responds to the needs of both the city and its people. The singular shape, which was driven by the desire to incorporate interior spaces with more generous heights, interacts with the surrounding urban context in a seamless way. The design also sought to restore a sense of openness to the public space, making it more inviting and connected to the city.

The project features three programmatic levels: the garden at the top, aligning with the Cordoaria garden and Praça Gomes Teixeira; the commercial street in the middle, connecting key landmarks such as Lello Bookstore and Clérigos Tower; and a pre-existing parking area below, which connects to lower streets. This vertical organization enhances the flow of movement and integrates different parts of the urban fabric.

A key goal of the design was to ensure safety and well-being for all users of the space. The proposal emphasized creating a functional and natural pathway, free from barriers and obstacles, to encourage greater use and engagement with the space. The design's scale and shape were carefully considered to create a dialogue with the surrounding architecture, ensuring the new elements complemented and enhanced the historical fabric of the area.

The facade, made of textured prefabricated concrete and white metallic structural elements, is designed to provide shade and shelter along the commercial street, offering protection for pedestrians from both the sun and rain. The rooftop, conceived as a green space, is punctuated with Olive trees—an homage to the city's ancient heritage, referencing the Porta do Olival (Olival Gate).

Ultimately, the project sought to balance modern functionality with a deep respect for the historic context, creating a vibrant, open public space that fosters connection and activity. This project was designed in collaboration with architect Pedro Balonas.
