Designed as a place of refuge and renewal, the Mindfulness Center offers a carefully curated environment for meditation, therapy, and holistic well-being. Located on a compact urban site in St. George, Utah, the building embraces an inward-focused design, centering around a secluded courtyard that provides natural light and a serene ambiance for the surrounding spaces.

To enhance the sense of retreat, the building is subtly recessed 60 cm into the ground, reducing its visual impact while fostering a greater feeling of shelter and tranquility. This design approach also leverages thermal inertia, helping to regulate interior temperatures naturally. Sunlight is optimized seasonally, while cross-ventilation further supports a comfortable indoor environment.

Upon arrival, visitors descend a short flight of steps into an outdoor transition space before entering the main lobby, reinforcing a mindful shift from the outside world. The program is arranged in two wings—one housing the reception, a multipurpose meditation room, and essential services, while the other contains twelve consultation offices, additional amenities, and a break room. These are connected by a northern hallway and conference room that open to a secondary courtyard, while a covered exterior passage forms the southern link.

The material palette reflects the region’s character, with red brick resting on a recessed concrete base, complemented by warm wood accents. In areas where secondary patios open up, wood screens replace brick to maintain a sense of openness while offering privacy. A sloped zinc roof in a copper finish subtly directs rainwater toward the courtyard, reinforcing the building’s connection to its natural setting.

With design development complete, construction is underway, and the Mindfulness Center is set to be completed by the end of 2025.
