The Pinhais Museum in Matosinhos, Portugal, is located in a former factory that occupies a large portion of one of the blocks in the orthogonal grid of Matosinhos Sul. This factory stands as one of the last living examples of the canning industry, which played a vital role in the region's economy during the last century. The client’s vision for the building was to undertake necessary conservation work while adapting parts of its interior to accommodate a new cultural program—a living museum dedicated to the history of the canning industry.

All of the building’s distinctive industrial elements were preserved and carefully highlighted, ensuring the space retains its original charm. Notable features such as the centuries-old wooden staircase leading to the original office, as well as the entire wooden truss structure that supports the roof, have been meticulously maintained. These preserved elements offer a unique and unforgettable experience for visitors.

Externally, the factory's architectural language has been maintained with only the necessary adaptations to support the new museum program. These changes were made with the goal of preserving the building’s original appearance, ensuring that the historic essence is not distorted while providing the space with the conditions needed for its new purpose. This project was designed in collaboration with Filipa Ribeiro.
