This project involved the transformation of an early 1990s home in Miramar, south of Porto. Rather than demolishing the existing structure, the client sought a more contemporary aesthetic and an improved living experience while maintaining the original sloped roofs.
The design defines a strong perimeter through white walls that wrap the house, creating a clear architectural frame. Within this boundary, the roof transitions seamlessly into walls of grey zinc and glazing, reinforcing the home’s modern identity. The defined perimeter also allows for the creation of exterior spaces between the east and west facades—patios that extend the interior spaces outdoors under a series of white beams.
Positioned on the first row of houses facing the sea, the home benefits from unobstructed views, with only a lower-level road separating it from the sand. A west-facing beam was designed to provide privacy for the bedroom windows while maintaining a direct visual connection to the garden and ocean. This element also offers shade to the living and dining areas.
Material selections enhance both elegance and durability, with Portuguese white marble used for the façade wainscot and surrounding pavement. An infinity pool aligns with the dining room, featuring two levels—one flat section near the house, allowing for in-water lounging, and a sloped portion for swimming.
Inside, the home is organized across three levels: the second floor houses three suites, the ground floor includes the garage, kitchen, dining, and living areas, while the basement accommodates a guest suite, an additional living room, storage, and a gym.
This remodel balances the preservation of the original structure with a refined, contemporary vision, enhancing the home’s functionality, privacy, and connection to its surroundings.
